THE KEY
Daniel’s prosperity continues across a change of empire: the word pictures advancement that is not confined to one ruler.
THE MEANING
Your capacity to advance can remain present while the powers around you change. Daniel’s prosperity spans two reigns, so a change in who governs his surroundings does not end his flourishing.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Your flourishing depends on one favorable season or one person’s approval.
THE ROOT
הַצְלַח
hatslaḥ
GROWS FROM
צלח
To advance, make headway, or succeed.
“prospered” in this verse is hatslaḥ. The Aramaic word comes from a root that can describe making progress and prospering. Daniel’s advance spans two reigns, so the verse presents prosperity as continuing through a change of power.
ALSO GROWS
matsliach: Prospering; succeeding.
מַצְלִיחַ
The same root describes Joseph as prosperous in an Egyptian master’s house (Genesis 39:2), linking prosperity with life that advances under foreign authority.
yatsliach: He will prosper; he will succeed.
יַצְלִיחַ
The same root describes the flourishing tree in Psalm 1:3, whose fruit continues in season and whose leaf does not wither.
THE PATTERN
A life can continue to advance and bear fruit across changing conditions.
And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.THE THREAD
And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.Joseph’s “prosperous” and Daniel’s “prospered” come from the same root, צלח, meaning to advance or succeed. In both verses, that progress appears under foreign power, opening prosperity as continued headway within changing circumstances.
