What Does Daniel 7:12 Mean in the King James?
As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
In Aramaic, “beasts” and “lives” grow from the same root, so the verse separates a creature’s existence from its dominion.
THE MEANING
The verse holds two conditions apart: dominion is taken away, while life continues for a bounded span. What remains is not authority restored; it is life granted “for a season and time.”
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A power that still exists must still possess authority.
THE ROOT
חֵיוָתָא
ḥēwāṯā
GROWS FROM
חיה
ḥ-y-h
To live, be alive.
“beasts / lives” in this verse is ḥēwāṯā. The Aramaic words for “beasts” and “lives” share this root: both belong to the language of living creatures. The verse can therefore strip dominion from the beasts while extending their life, keeping what they are distinct from the rule they held.
ALSO GROWS
ḥēwāh: Living creature, beast.
חֵיוָה
This names the creatures whose dominion is taken away.
ḥayyîn: Life, lives.
חַיִּין
This names what continues after their dominion ends.
שָׁלְטָן
šolṭān
GROWS FROM
שלט
š-l-ṭ
To rule, exercise authority.
The word for dominion grows from the root of ruling. Its removal is a change in authority, not a statement that the beasts immediately cease to exist.
ALSO GROWS
šəlaṭ: To rule, have authority.
שְׁלַט
The verbal form makes clear that dominion is the act or capacity of ruling.
šolṭān: Rule, dominion, authority.
שָׁלְטָן
This is the power the verse says is taken away.
וְאַרְכָה
veʾarkhā
GROWS FROM
ארך
ʾ-r-kh
To be long, lengthen.
“prolonged / length” in this verse is veʾarkhā. The Aramaic speaks of length being granted to their lives. The extension concerns duration; it does not restore the dominion already taken away.
ALSO GROWS
ʾorekh: Length.
אֹרֶךְ
This Hebrew cognate makes the image of an allotted length of life concrete.
ʾarikh: Long, extended.
אֲרִיךְ
This related Aramaic form carries the sense of something continuing for a lengthened span.
THE PATTERN
Dominion can end before the living thing beneath it ends, and its remaining time is bounded.
And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass; Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.THE THREAD
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.Genesis calls the formed human a נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה (nephesh ḥayyāh, living being), using the same חיה root found in Daniel’s words for beasts and lives. That shared root makes the distinction clear: the living creature can remain even when its dominion is gone.
