What Does Deuteronomy 12:30 Mean in the King James?
Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.

THE KEY
The snare begins when “How did they serve?” turns another pattern into a template for your own life.
THE MEANING
The verse names a living danger: curiosity can become a path of imitation when it seeks the method behind a practice. What you pursue for understanding can shape the service your hands give. The snare lies in following a pattern until it becomes your own.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that curiosity is neutral until you formally adopt a belief: seeking another pattern’s method can already place you on its path.
THE ROOT
תִּדְרֹשׁ
tidrosh
GROWS FROM
דרש
d-r-sh
To seek, inquire, or search out.
“enquire” in this verse is tidrosh. The verb carries the sense of seeking after, not merely noticing. The verse links that search to a question about how another people serve, exposing how seeking a model can set you on its track before imitation is consciously chosen.
ALSO GROWS
doresh: One who seeks or inquires.
דּוֹרֵשׁ
The seeker is already moving toward what they pursue; the verse warns about where that search is directed.
midrash: Interpretive inquiry or exposition.
מִדְרָשׁ
This related word preserves the root’s sense of searching for meaning, showing how inquiry can become an approach to a pattern rather than detached observation.
יַעַבְדוּ
yaʿavdu
GROWS FROM
עבד
ʿ-b-d
To serve, work, or labor.
The verse asks how the nations serve their gods, locating allegiance in a practice rather than an abstract idea. This root also names the servant and service or work, joining what a person gives themselves to with what they do.
ALSO GROWS
ʿeved: Servant.
עֶבֶד
The same root links serving to the person who serves, making allegiance a lived relationship.
ʿavodah: Service, work, or labor.
עֲבֹדָה
The word’s range shows how devotion takes shape through enacted service, the very pattern the verse warns against copying.
אַחֲרֵיהֶם
aḥarêhem
GROWS FROM
אחר
ʾ-ḥ-r
After or behind; what follows in space or sequence.
“after them” in this verse is aḥarêhem. The phrase pictures following as being behind them, in the wake of their path. Related forms for what is last or comes afterward give that following a temporal edge: the pattern you trail can shape where you arrive.
ALSO GROWS
ʾaḥar: After, behind.
אַחַר
This is the direct sense carried in “after them,” making imitation a matter of taking up the path behind another.
ʾaḥarit: The latter end or what comes afterward.
אַחֲרִית
The related word links what follows now with what comes later, giving the verse’s warning about following a sense of consequence.
ʾaḥaron: Last or latter.
אַחֲרוֹן
This branch carries the idea of what comes after, echoing the verse’s concern with where a chosen pattern leads.
THE PATTERN
What a person follows can move from something they study into a pattern they enact.
Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.THE THREAD
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.Both verses use עבד (ʿ-b-d), “serve,” so the question is which pattern receives that service. Joshua makes the choice explicit; Deuteronomy shows how the turn toward another pattern can begin, with seeking how it works, then doing likewise.
