What Does Deuteronomy 12:5 Mean in the King James?
But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there, even unto his habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come:

THE KEY
The chosen place is where God’s name, שֵׁם (shem), name as nature, takes up residence, so seeking becomes a movement toward presence.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks of an encounter with God that has an address: the dwelling God chooses, where his nature is set. Seeking turns you toward that dwelling; coming follows. The presence is not something you install by your own choice, but something you meet where God makes his dwelling.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that sacred presence is wherever you decide to place it: here, God chooses the dwelling, and the seeker follows.
THE ROOT
לְשִׁכְנוֹ
lishikhno
GROWS FROM
שכן
שָׁכַן (shakan) means to dwell, settle, or inhabit.
English “habitation” can sound like a container, but this root carries the sense of settling in and inhabiting. Its branches describe both the dwelling and the resident, so the verse points toward a presence that makes the chosen place an address for encounter.
ALSO GROWS
mishkan: dwelling, tabernacle
מִשְׁכָּן
The same root names the place where presence dwells.
shakhen: neighbor, resident
שָׁכֵן
The dwelling and the one who inhabits it share the same root.
תִּדְרְשׁוּ
tidreshu
GROWS FROM
דרש
דָּרַשׁ (darash) means to seek, inquire, or ask after.
This seeking carries the force of active inquiry, not a passing wish. The verse’s movement is to seek toward the dwelling, then come.
ALSO GROWS
midrash: inquiry, exposition
מִדְרָשׁ
The same root connects seeking with close interpretation and inquiry.
derishah: inquiry, request
דְּרִישָׁה
This branch preserves the asking and searching within the act of seeking.
יִבְחַר
yivchar
GROWS FROM
בחר
בָּחַר (bachar) means to choose or select.
“choose” in this verse is yivchar. The choosing belongs to God; the seeker seeks and comes to the place already chosen. The center of encounter is received rather than self-appointed.
ALSO GROWS
mivchar: choice, selected portion
מִבְחָר
This branch carries the idea of what has been selected.
bachir: chosen one
בָּחִיר
The same root describes one who has been selected.
THE PATTERN
Seeking moves toward the dwelling God chooses, where divine presence is among people.
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.THE THREAD
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. Both verses use שכן (shakan, to dwell or settle) for God’s dwelling. Deuteronomy directs the seeker toward the chosen dwelling; Exodus opens that dwelling as God’s presence among the people.
