This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The English “deliver” hides a transfer: the elders give the killer into the hand of the victim’s kin, and the text says that he dies.

A refuge does not make a proven killing disappear. The elders themselves fetch the killer, place him in the blood-avenger’s hand, and death is the stated outcome.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being sheltered does not mean the bloodshed has no claim or that refuge makes the killer immune from consequence.

גֹּאֵל הַדָּם

go’el ha-dam

GROWS FROM

ג־א־ל

to reclaim, redeem, or act as a kinsman

“avenger of blood” in this verse is go’el ha-dam. “Avenger” translates ⁨גֹּאֵל⁩ (go’el, a kinsman who reclaims or acts on kin’s behalf), tying the role to family claim. Here the object of that claim is blood, and the verse keeps the lethal consequence in view.

ALSO GROWS

ga’al: To redeem, reclaim, or act as a kinsman.

גָּאַל

Leviticus 25:25 uses this root for a kinsman reclaiming his brother’s land; here the kin’s claim concerns blood.

ge’ullah: Redemption or recovery through a kinsman.

גְּאֻלָּה

The shared word-family links the avenger’s role to kinship, without making the act of blood-avenging gentle or restorative.

וְנָתְנוּ אֹתוֹ

ve-nathnu oto

GROWS FROM

נ־ת־ן

to give, set, or place

“deliver” in this verse is ve-nathnu oto. The Hebrew says the elders “give” or “place” him into the avenger’s hand. The plain give-root makes the transfer of a person into lethal custody starkly concrete.

ALSO GROWS

natan: To give, set, or place.

נָתַן

This is the verb beneath the handover: the elders place the killer in someone else’s custody.

mattan: Something given.

מַתָּן

The same root can name something given; here what is given is a person over to the blood-avenger, exposing the severity of the act.

וְשָׁלְחוּ

ve-shalchu

GROWS FROM

ש־ל־ח

to send, send forth, or release

This root can describe sending or releasing, but here the elders send for the killer so they can fetch and hand him over. The direction of the release matters: he leaves refuge for the avenger’s hand.

ALSO GROWS

shallach: To send away or release.

שַׁלַּח

This is the same root used in Exodus 5:1 in the command to let the people go; here the sending initiates a transfer toward punishment.

shilluaḥ: A sending away or dismissal.

שִׁלּוּחַ

The word-family can mark being sent away; in this verse, that movement removes the killer from refuge and places him under the avenger’s authority.

A community’s refuge does not erase accountability for bloodshed; judgment governs when protection from the avenger ends.

And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger; that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.
Numbers 35:12 · KJVRefuge restrains the avenger while the manslayer awaits judgment; it is protection with a boundary.
Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
Genesis 9:6 · KJVThe verse states the grave consequence attached to shedding human blood.
For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
Romans 13:4 · KJVPublic authority is described as bearing the sword and executing consequence against wrongdoing.
If thy brother be waxen poor, and hath sold away some of his possession, and if any of his kin come to redeem it, then shall he redeem that which his brother sold.
Leviticus 25:25 · KJV

The kinsman who comes to redeem is ⁨גֹּאֵל⁩ (go’el, a kinsman who reclaims), the same word-family as Deuteronomy’s “avenger of blood.” The object changes the action: here the kin reclaims land; in Deuteronomy, he claims blood, making kinship central while leaving the violence in view.
