What Does Deuteronomy 19:19 Mean in the King James?
Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The “thought” here is a plotted injury, and the judgment makes the hidden design answer for the harm it aimed at.
THE MEANING
When a witness is proved to have plotted harm against another, the consequence matches the harm he meant to bring. The concealed design becomes visible in the judgment it receives.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A failed scheme is not harmless simply because it did not succeed; this verse treats deliberately intended harm as accountable.
THE ROOT
זָמַם
zā·mam
GROWS FROM
ז־מ־ם
z-m-m
To devise or plot; to form a deliberate plan.
The word translated “thought” describes a scheme, not a passing idea: the witness has planned an injury. The judgment answers that intent, making the concealed design part of the consequence.
ALSO GROWS
mezimmah: plan, discretion
מְזִמָּה
In Proverbs 1:4 this same root names foresight or discretion, showing that planning can serve wise judgment or a harmful scheme.
zimmah: wicked plan, lewdness
זִמָּה
This branch makes the root’s darker use explicit: a plan can be shaped toward harm.
וּבִעַרְתָּ
uviʿarta
GROWS FROM
ב־ע־ר
b-ʿ-r
To burn or consume; by extension, to clear away or purge.
“put away” in this verse is uviʿarta. The word for putting evil away carries the image of consuming or clearing it out. The verse depicts judgment as removing a destructive scheme from the community.
ALSO GROWS
baʿar: burn, consume
בָּעַר
The root’s sense of consuming gives force to the verse’s image of evil being cleared away.
biʿer: purged, removed
בִּעֵר
This same root is used for removing evil in Deuteronomy 13:5, linking the judgment here with the clearing away of destructive wrongdoing.
THE PATTERN
A destructive design returns upon its maker, turning hidden intent into consequence.
His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own pate.Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.THE THREAD
To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.“Discretion” translates מְזִמָּה (mezimmah), from the same root as the plotted scheme in this verse. The shared root reveals planning as a capacity that can serve wisdom or become a design for harm.
