What Does Deuteronomy 19:4 Mean in the King James?
And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;

THE KEY
A fatal outcome does not by itself tell the whole story: the verse distinguishes the act from both knowledge in the moment and hatred carried beforehand.
THE MEANING
The verse holds a death alongside the slayer’s lack of knowledge and absence of prior hatred. That person has a path to flee and live, while the death remains real.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that every person who causes a death must have acted with deliberate intent and prior hatred.
THE ROOT
בִּבְלִי דַעַת
bivli daʿat
GROWS FROM
י־ד־ע
y-d-ʿ
to know, recognize, or perceive
“ignorantly” in this verse is bivli daʿat. The phrase means “without knowledge.” Beside the statement that the slayer had not hated his neighbor before, it distinguishes what happened from both awareness in the moment and hostility carried beforehand.
ALSO GROWS
yādaʿ: Know, perceive
יָדַע
This verb is the seed behind daʿat, the knowledge absent in the act described.
daʿat: Knowledge, awareness
דַּעַת
In בִּבְלִי דַעַת (bivli daʿat), this word names what is missing when the fatal act occurs.
יָנוּס
yanus
GROWS FROM
נ־ו־ס
n-w-s
to flee, escape
“flee” in this verse is yanus. Flight is the stated path by which the slayer may live. A branch of this same root names refuge, so escape here leads toward a protected place rather than ending with the act.
ALSO GROWS
manos: Refuge, escape
מָנוֹס
This noun from the same root names the kind of place the slayer’s flight reaches.
nas: One who flees
נָס
This form names the person in motion, echoing the verse’s slayer who runs toward life.
THE PATTERN
Scripture distinguishes fatal harm by attending to knowledge and prior hostility while making room for life through refuge.
And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee. But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait,Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.THE THREAD
That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. The Hebrew root נוּס (nūs, flee) carries the slayer from the act toward a place where life is possible. Joshua names that place as refuge from the avenger of blood.
