This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew verb for “compassed” makes the route’s forward movement a long circuit around the mountain.

Your movement can include a long circuit: you turn, set out, and remain in motion around what lies ahead. A loop is still movement, even when arrival is not immediate.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that a route must be straight to count as progress: a long circuit can still be movement.

וַנָּסָב

vannāsov

GROWS FROM

סבב

⁨סבב⁩ (sāḇaḇ) means to turn around, go around, or encircle; ⁨וַנָּסָב⁩ (vannāsov) means “we went around” or “we circled.”

“compassed” in this verse is vannāsov. The Hebrew root makes the circling motion audible across its word-family. Its branches name both the act of circling and what is surrounded, joining the travelers’ route to the space around the mountain.

ALSO GROWS

sōvēḇ: To circle or surround.

סוֹבֵב

It names encircling as ongoing movement, bringing out the route’s shape around the mountain.

məsubbāḇ: Surrounded or encircled.

מְסֻבָּב

The same three consonants name what has been enclosed, linking the circling path to the terrain around it.

A journey can keep moving when its route bends, circles, or is redirected.

But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt.
Exodus 13:18 · KJVThe way through the wilderness is described as led about, so a circuit is still the route through the terrain.
A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.
Proverbs 16:9 · KJVA person’s planned path and redirected steps coexist, leaving direction open within movement.
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
Acts 16:6 · KJVMovement continues as one direction closes, showing that a route can change while a journey remains underway.
Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.
Deuteronomy 2:3 · KJV

The same Hebrew root for circling returns here with a limit: the circuit has lasted long enough. The turn northward shows the loop as one stretch of the route, not its final direction.
