This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Kinship can transmit a name, but it cannot transfer a death sentence.

This verse draws a hard line around responsibility: a parent does not answer with a child’s life, and a child does not answer with a parent’s. The act and its sentence belong to the person who commits it; family ties do not make someone a substitute. Its language is literal and severe: one person is not put to death for another person’s wrongdoing.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that family ties make one person answerable with their life for another person’s act.

חֶטְאוֹ

ḥeṭʾô

GROWS FROM

חטא

ḥ-ṭ-ʾ

to miss; to go wrong

“his own sin” in this verse is ḥeṭʾô. The Hebrew phrase ⁨בְּחֶטְאוֹ⁩ (bəḥeṭʾô, “for his own missing”) attaches the act to the person. The family terms on either side do not transfer that missing; the sentence belongs to the person whose act it is.

ALSO GROWS

ḥāṭāʾ: to miss, err, or incur guilt

חָטָא

The verb keeps the root connected to an act a person commits, rather than a condition passed through a family.

ḥaṭṭāʾt: missing; offering for the missing

חַטָּאת

The same seed can name both the missing and what addresses it; here, the missing remains with the person who committed it.

Responsibility follows the person who commits the act; kinship does not transfer another person’s guilt.

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
Ezekiel 18:20 · KJVIt states the same boundary: neither parent nor child bears the other’s wrongdoing.
But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.
Jeremiah 31:30 · KJVThe one who eats the sour grape bears its effect; the image keeps consequence with the person who acts.
So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
Romans 14:12 · KJVEach person gives an account of himself, extending personal responsibility beyond family ties.
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
Ezekiel 18:20 · KJV

Ezekiel repeats the same boundary and uses ⁨חטא⁩ (ḥ-ṭ-ʾ, “to miss”) in “sinneth.” Deuteronomy states the rule against one person being put to death for another’s act; Ezekiel opens it into a wider picture of each person’s conduct remaining with that person.
