What Does Deuteronomy 25:7 Mean in the King James?

And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

A dead man’s name does not stand by itself; its continuation depends on whether the living are willing to raise it.

A name here is a person’s continuing identity among a people, carried forward through the life of another. When the brother refuses, the woman brings that refusal to the gate, where the elders hear what the dead man’s name may lose: a place in Israel’s continuing life.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This unsettles the belief that a dead person’s name has no claim on the living once their life ends; here, the living can either raise that name or refuse to.

לְהָקִים

lehaqim

GROWS FROM

קום

q-w-m

to rise, stand, or be established

The Hebrew phrase ⁨לְהָקִים שֵׁם⁩ (lehaqim shem, “to raise up a name”) makes continuity an action: the living can make the dead man’s ⁨שֵׁם⁩ (shem, “name, remembered identity”) stand among Israel. His brother’s refusal does more than decline a marriage; it withholds the act that would give that name a place in the people’s continuing life.

ALSO GROWS

heqim: to raise, establish, or cause to stand

הֵקִים

This is the same root in a form meaning to make something stand, matching the charge to establish the dead brother’s name.

maqom: place

מָקוֹם

This word from the same root connects standing with having a place; the verse asks whether the dead man’s name will continue to have a place in Israel.

A name remains present when another acts to carry it forward or preserve it.

And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
Genesis 38:8 · KJVThe charge to raise up seed makes another person’s action the means by which a dead brother’s name continues.
Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
Ruth 4:10 · KJVThe name is carried forward through another’s commitment, with its continuation publicly witnessed at the gate.
He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
Revelation 3:5 · KJVHere, too, a name’s continued presence rests on another’s act: it is neither blotted out nor left unspoken.
And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
Deuteronomy 25:6 · KJV

The line just before this one says the firstborn will “succeed in the name” of the dead brother. The Hebrew uses the same root, ⁨קום⁩ (q-w-m), “to rise or stand,” that appears in “raise up” here: this verse names the refusal that would leave the name unraised.
