What Does Deuteronomy 29:21 Mean in the King James?
And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law:

THE KEY
Here, being set apart is not automatically an honor: the boundary that distinguishes one person from the tribes also marks him for calamity.
THE MEANING
The warning is stark now: belonging among a people does not make a person immune to judgment. The LORD singles one person out from Israel’s tribes for calamity under the covenant’s written curses.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being part of the covenant community automatically protects me from its consequences.
THE ROOT
וְהִבְדִּילוֹ
vehivdilo
GROWS FROM
בדל
to divide, distinguish, or set apart
“separate him” in this verse is vehivdilo. Badal names distinction itself: to separate is to give someone or something a boundary and a different place. Here, the boundary is severe, the person is distinguished from every tribe by being assigned the covenant’s calamity; being set apart can describe exposure to judgment, not just honor.
ALSO GROWS
nivdal: separated, set apart
נִבְדָּל
This form shows the person as marked off by a boundary, matching the verse’s separation from the tribes.
mavdil: one who separates or distinguishes
מַבְדִּיל
This form brings the act of distinguishing into view: the verse presents the LORD as assigning the person a distinct place under the covenant’s curses.
THE PATTERN
Scripture uses separation to draw a real boundary that assigns people or things a distinct place, whether for order, belonging, or judgment.
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am the LORD your God, which have separated you from other people. And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:THE THREAD
And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. The verb translated “divided” comes from בדל (badal, to separate or distinguish), the same root as “separate” here. In Genesis, that boundary orders the created world; in Deuteronomy, it singles a person out for covenantal calamity.
