What Does Deuteronomy 30:2 Mean in the King James?
And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul;

THE KEY
The verse reveals return as a whole-person movement: turning toward the LORD takes the form of hearing his voice and responding.
THE MEANING
Your return is a whole-person turning, with your heart and living self engaged. Hearing the LORD’s voice means hearing and responding, joining inward reorientation to a lived answer. The verse includes your children, extending this response into a life shared across generations.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that return can remain only a private feeling; here it includes hearing the LORD’s voice and responding with your whole self.
THE ROOT
וְשַׁבְתָּ
veshavta
GROWS FROM
שׁוּב
shuv
To turn back or return.
This root also describes turning away: מְשׁוּבָה (meshubah, turning away or backsliding) shares the same seed. Return and departure are movements in opposite directions, not unrelated conditions.
ALSO GROWS
veshav: And he will turn or return.
וְשָׁב
The same root appears in the next verse as the LORD turns the people’s captivity, linking their return with restoration.
meshubah: Turning away; backsliding.
מְשׁוּבָה
This branch shows that the root can describe movement away as well as movement back; direction gives the turn its meaning.
וְשָׁמַעְתָּ בְּקֹלוֹ
veshamaʿta beqolo
GROWS FROM
שָׁמַע
shamaʿ
To hear or listen; in this construction, to hear and respond.
“obey his voice” in this verse is veshamaʿta beqolo. The Hebrew phrase literally places the hearing “in his voice,” while the verb carries the sense of responsive listening. The verse holds hearing and response together, so its return is relational rather than merely directional.
ALSO GROWS
shema: Hear and respond.
שְׁמַע
This familiar form carries the same movement from receiving what is heard into response.
shemuʿah: A report; something heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
This branch names what reaches the ear as a message, illuminating the voice that the verse calls the whole self to hear and answer.
נַפְשְׁךָ
nafshekha
GROWS FROM
נֶפֶשׁ
nefesh
The living self or person.
“soul” in this verse is nafshekha. Nefesh means the living self, not merely a detachable inner part. A related verb, וַיִּנָּפֵשׁ (vayyinnaphesh, was refreshed), shows the root also describing restoration; here, “all your nefesh” gathers your lived existence into the return.
ALSO GROWS
nefashot: Living souls; persons.
נְפָשׁוֹת
The plural shows nefesh can name whole living persons, supporting the sense of a whole self rather than a fragment within one.
vayyinnaphesh: And he was refreshed or rested.
וַיִּנָּפֵשׁ
This related verb appears in the description of the seventh day in Exodus 31:17; the root’s reach from living self to refreshment adds a shade of restoration to “all your soul.”
THE PATTERN
Turning toward the LORD is expressed as a whole-hearted response and opens into restored nearness.
Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.THE THREAD
That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. The same root, שׁוּב (shuv, turn or return), marks your return to the LORD in verse 2 and the LORD’s turning your captivity in verse 3. One root holds both movements: the people turn toward God, and God turns toward their restoration and gathering.
