What Does Deuteronomy 32:40 Mean in the King James?
For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The oath rests on God’s own life, which continues through every age.
THE MEANING
God’s own living is the ground of this declaration; no age contains its limit. The raised hand gives the words the shape of an oath, and the speaker’s life is not borrowed from anything beyond himself. His declaration stands across the ages because he is living.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that God’s life or presence expires with a passing age, or that his word depends on a power outside himself.
THE ROOT
חַי
ḥay
GROWS FROM
חיה
To live, remain alive, or bring to life.
“live” in this verse is ḥay. The declaration is not simply that God exists: the word names living. Its root also carries the sense of life restored or sustained, so the oath rests in a life that endures through the ages.
ALSO GROWS
ḥayyim: Life, living.
חַיִּים
The same root names life itself, showing that the verse’s declaration is grounded in living, not in an abstract title.
heḥĕyāh: He caused to live; he revived.
הֶחֱיָה
The root also speaks of life being restored, placing enduring life and renewed life within the same word family.
עוֹלָם
ʿolam
GROWS FROM
עלם
To hide or be out of sight; עוֹלָם refers to a distant age or duration beyond view.
“for ever” in this verse is ʿolam. Here, leʿolam places God’s living across the ages, including time beyond the reader’s horizon. The verse holds the declaration present through every age that lies out of sight.
ALSO GROWS
ʿālam: To hide, conceal.
עָלַם
This related verb gives the word for ages a sense of time receding beyond what can be seen.
neʿlam: Hidden, concealed.
נֶעְלָם
The same root describes what is out of sight, echoing the ages beyond the reader’s measure.
THE PATTERN
God grounds his declarations in his own life and being.
But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,THE THREAD
I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.“Live” here and “I live” in Deuteronomy 32:40 come from חיה (ḥ-y-h), the root meaning to live or bring to life. The Psalm gives that same living root a human voice: life becomes the ground from which the LORD’s works are declared.
