This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The word for “between” also belongs to the root of “understanding”: the space Moses holds is where the word can be heard through fear.

When the fire makes direct approach feel impossible, the word can still reach you through a voice in the space between. Fear is present, and so is speech; one does not cancel the other. Distance remains, yet it carries the word to the hearer.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that fear makes the word inaccessible: you can be unable to ascend and still be addressed.

בֵּין

bein

GROWS FROM

בין

b-y-n

To distinguish, discern, or perceive a difference.

The same root carries both “between” and “understanding.” The space Moses occupies is more than a gap: it is where what feels overwhelming can be distinguished from the word reaching the hearer.

ALSO GROWS

bein: Between, among

בֵּין

This is the word used for Moses standing between the LORD and the people; the position itself gives the verse its central image.

binah: Understanding, insight

בִּינָה

Its shared root links the space between two sides with the capacity to discern.

hevin: To understand, discern

הֵבִין

This verbal form shows the same root at work as an act of perception, echoing the word becoming hearable across the distance.

דָּבָר

davar

GROWS FROM

דבר

d-b-r

To speak; the related noun also means a word, matter, or thing.

The word that reaches the people belongs to a word-family that also names a matter or thing. The verse lets speech feel concrete: it comes across the space between as something the hearer can receive.

ALSO GROWS

davar: Word, matter, or thing

דָּבָר

This is the spoken word Moses brings across the distance, with the sense of something that can be received.

dibber: He spoke

דִּבֵּר

This verbal form makes the word an act of speech, not only an idea.

devarim: Words, matters, or things

דְּבָרִים

The plural preserves the root’s joining of what is spoken with the matters being spoken about.

When direct encounter overwhelms or divides, a mediator becomes the space where relation can continue.

And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
Exodus 20:19 · KJVThe verse gives voice to fear of direct encounter and to the need for a voice that can be heard.
Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
Job 9:33 · KJVThe longing for someone who can reach both sides names the missing space where relation could continue.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
1 Timothy 2:5 · KJVThe verse names mediation as a bridge between God and humanity, echoing the one who stands between the LORD and the people.
And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
Genesis 1:6 · KJV

The same Hebrew word ⁨בֵּין⁩ (bein, “between”) appears in the creation of a space between the waters. There it marks a distinction that gives the waters order; here it names the space through which the word reaches someone unable to approach the fire.
