King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The covenant does not stay inside the mountain’s fire; it descends into two human hands.
THE MEANING
The mountain burns, and the covenant is held in your hands as the descent begins. What is encountered in the fire is already moving into a form you can carry.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that what is sacred can only remain in overwhelming heights dissolves here: the covenant is in human hands as the descent begins.
THE ROOT
וָאֵרֵד
va'ered
GROWS FROM
ירד
To descend, go down.
“came down” in this verse is va'ered. The same root forms יְרִידָה (yeridah), “descent,” and הוֹרִיד (horid), “bring down.” The verse makes the movement tangible: the covenant comes down from the burning height in the hands that carry it.
ALSO GROWS
yeridah: Descent, a going down.
יְרִידָה
It names the downward movement that places the covenant within reach of the hands.
horid: He brought down, caused to descend.
הוֹרִיד
This causative form shares ירד and echoes how something can be carried from a height into a new place.
בֹּעֵר
bo'er
GROWS FROM
בער
To burn, consume.
“burned with fire” in this verse is bo'er. בֹּעֵר describes the mountain as burning, an active condition surrounding the descent. Its family includes words for burning and setting alight, so the fire is part of the scene through which the covenant is carried, not just a distant flash.
ALSO GROWS
be'erah: A burning, a blaze.
בְּעֵרָה
This noun from בער gives the burning mountain a name from the same word family.
mav'ir: One who sets alight; kindling.
מַבְעִיר
This form shares the root consonants and shows the active, consuming force present around the descent.
THE PATTERN
What is received amid fire moves from the height into human hands and inward life.
And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.THE THREAD
And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. The Hebrew verb ירד (yarad), “descend,” appears in both verses alongside the tablets carried in the hand. Exodus adds that the tablets are written on both sides, showing the covenant arriving intact in the descent.
