What Does Ecclesiastes 11:5 Mean in the King James?
As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.

THE KEY
The breath you cannot trace and the bones forming beyond your sight are both part of a making already underway.
THE MEANING
You cannot trace the course of the breath or watch bones take shape in the womb. In the same way, God’s making is active beyond what you can observe or explain. Life is present within processes whose full path you cannot see.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Not knowing how life is formed does not mean that nothing is being made.
THE ROOT
רוּחַ
ruach
GROWS FROM
רוח
Breath or wind in motion; the same word can also mean spirit.
רוּחַ (ruach) is one Hebrew word rendered as wind, breath, or spirit; English can make these sound like separate realities. Here its unseen course is set beside bones forming in the womb, joining the movement of breath with the hidden shaping of a body.
ALSO GROWS
ruach: Wind.
רוּחַ
The verse speaks of its unseen course, an image of movement whose path you cannot trace.
ruach: Breath.
רוּחַ
This is the same word, showing that the life moving within you belongs to the verse’s image of ruach.
ruach: Spirit.
רוּחַ
This familiar rendering holds the same Hebrew word together with its senses of breath and wind.
מַעֲשֵׂה
ma'aseh ya'aseh
GROWS FROM
עשה
To do or make.
“works; maketh” in this verse is ma'aseh ya'aseh. The Hebrew uses the same עשה (asah) word family for God’s “works” and for the one “who maketh all.” English separates the work from the making; the verse links them as an active process whose reach you cannot see.
ALSO GROWS
ma'aseh: Work or deed.
מַעֲשֶׂה
This is the word rendered “works,” naming what is being done.
ya'aseh: He makes or does.
יַעֲשֶׂה
This is the same root in “who maketh all,” linking the work to its ongoing making.
עֲצָמִים
atsamim
GROWS FROM
עצם
Bone; the same consonants also carry senses of substance or self, and becoming strong or numerous.
The word for bones shares its consonants with language for substance and self, and with a verb meaning to become strong or numerous. The image is hidden formation of bodily substance, not simply a finished skeleton appearing from nowhere.
ALSO GROWS
etsem: Bone; also substance or self in related usage.
עֶצֶם
It makes the bones in the womb an image of the body’s forming substance.
atsam: To grow strong or become numerous.
עָצַם
The shared consonants echo growth and strengthening within the verse’s image of bones taking shape.
THE PATTERN
Life is formed through workings whose course remains hidden even while their effects are present.
The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.THE THREAD
The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.Ecclesiastes calls the course of רוּחַ (ruach, breath, wind, or spirit) unknowable; Job uses that same Hebrew word for God’s Spirit and pairs it with life being given. The link places the hidden course of life inside the making itself, not outside it.
