THE KEY
Numbness is the hinge: once pain stops registering, the self can be handed to an appetite that never reaches enough.
THE MEANING
When pain stops registering, the verse describes how you can hand yourself over to a desire that keeps enlarging its claim. “All uncleanness with greediness” names an unbounded appetite: it keeps reaching for more.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that not feeling harm means harm has lost its hold; here, numbness is where self-surrender can begin.
THE ROOT
ἀπηλγηκότες
apēlgēkotes
GROWS FROM
ἀλγ-
alg-
pain; to feel pain or suffer
“past feeling” in this verse is apēlgēkotes. The Greek describes having become unable to feel pain, not simply an empty emotional state. The root keeps pain inside the word: what disappears is the alarm, not necessarily the harm.
ALSO GROWS
algos: pain
ἄλγος
This noun makes clear that the numbness in the verse is loss of sensitivity to pain.
algeō: to feel pain, suffer
ἀλγέω
This verb names the feeling that has been lost; the verse describes the self as no longer registering it.
παρέδωκαν
paredōkan
GROWS FROM
δίδωμι
didōmi
to give, grant, or hand over
“have given themselves over” in this verse is paredōkan. The verse makes the self the object of the handover: they give themselves over. This is more than a state that happens to them; the wording depicts a transfer of themselves into the path of their desire.
ALSO GROWS
didōmi: to give
δίδωμι
This is the verb at the core of the handover, making the act of surrender visible inside the phrase.
paradosis: a handing down; tradition
παράδοσις
The same word family can describe what is handed on, extending the image of transfer beyond a single moment.
πλεονεξίᾳ
pleonexia
GROWS FROM
πλεονεκτ-
pleonekt-
to seek or grasp for more
Greediness here is not merely possessing much; the word points to reaching for more. Beside “all uncleanness,” it makes the appetite unbounded: its measure is always beyond what it already has.
ALSO GROWS
pleonektēs: one who wants more; a greedy person
πλεονέκτης
This names the person shaped by the same more-seeking appetite.
pleonekteō: to seek more; to take advantage of or defraud
πλεονεκτέω
This verb shows the appetite becoming action, reaching beyond what is already held.
THE PATTERN
When a person stops registering harm, desire can take over as a self-reinforcing path.
Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;THE THREAD
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:Both verses use παραδίδωμι (paradidōmi), “hand over,” and connect the handover with uncleanness. Ephesians names people giving themselves over; Romans describes them as given over to the same trajectory.
