What Does Ephesians 4:9 Mean in the King James?
(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The ascent does not bypass descent; it continues the same journey upward.
THE MEANING
This verse puts before you an ascent that passes through descent. “The lower parts of the earth” may mean the earth itself in contrast with heaven, or its lower regions; either way, the order is clear: he descends first, then ascends. The verse holds both movements together as one path.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The highest place is reached by bypassing the low place.
THE ROOT
κατέβη
katabē
GROWS FROM
βαίνω
bainō
To go or step; a verb of movement.
“descended” in this verse is katabē. English makes ascending and descending sound like separate actions, but both Greek verbs are built on βαίνω (bainō, “to go, to step”). Their direction changes while the underlying movement remains the same: the ascent continues a journey that first goes down.
ALSO GROWS
anabainō: To go up; ascend.
ἀναβαίνω
This same verb family gives the paired movement in the verse: ascent and descent share the motion-word, while their direction differs.
diabainō: To pass across; go through.
διαβαίνω
This branch also carries the sense of movement from one side or place to another, showing how the shared verb root holds motion while its form directs the path.
THE PATTERN
Scripture presents ascent as a movement that follows a real descent into the low place.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:THE THREAD
And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. The Greek verbs for “ascended” and “came down” share βαίνω (bainō, “to go, to step”); their directions differ. John places both movements in one sentence, opening Ephesians’ claim that ascent belongs to the one who first descended.
