THE KEY
An empire announces its reach by the obligations it can place, even on islands beyond its mainland.
THE MEANING
The verse shows how rule becomes tangible: it places obligations across the ground people inhabit, with its claim stretching even to islands across the water. Authority is measured here by how far that claim reaches.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the idea that power is only a title or symbol: authority becomes material when it can place a cost on the territories within its reach.
THE ROOT
מַס
mas
GROWS FROM
מ־ס־ס
To melt, dissolve, or waste away; the related noun means levy, tribute, or forced service.
The noun מַס (mas, levy or tribute) is traditionally linked to מָסַס (māsas, to melt or dissolve). That link gives the levy an undertone of depletion: the king’s claim is no abstraction, but reaches into what the land and its people yield.
ALSO GROWS
namas: To melt, dissolve, or lose firmness.
נָמַס
This verbal branch gives the word-family an echo of something being worn down; it adds an undertone to a levy laid over whole territories.
mas: A levy, tribute, or forced service.
מַס
This is the word the verse uses: the king’s authority takes material form as an obligation laid across land and sea-islands.
THE PATTERN
Political rule becomes tangible when authority is translated into obligations across a territory.
And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee. Also some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats.Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.THE THREAD
And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee. The Hebrew מַס (mas, levy or forced service) in Deuteronomy is the same word translated “tribute” in Esther. Deuteronomy pairs the levy with service, opening the weight compressed into Esther’s short line.
