THE KEY
The root behind “sat” also carries “dwell,” so Mordecai’s seat at the gate reads as a settled presence at the royal threshold.
THE MEANING
The women are gathered again while Mordecai sits at the king’s gate. The verse holds a collective movement beside one person’s settled presence at the threshold of royal access. Both occupy the same scene, though in different places.
THE ROOT
יֹשֵׁב
yōshēv
GROWS FROM
ישב
y-sh-b
To sit, dwell, remain, or inhabit.
“sat” in this verse is yōshēv. The same root holds sitting together with dwelling and remaining, so Mordecai’s posture also carries the sense of settled presence. At the king’s gate, his location becomes part of the scene, not just a passing detail.
ALSO GROWS
yashav: To sit, dwell, or remain.
יָשַׁב
The verb’s range links a seated posture with staying in a place.
moshav: A dwelling place, seat, or settlement.
מוֹשָׁב
This noun from the same root shows how sitting can extend into the idea of an established place.
הִקָּבֵץ
hiqqāvēṣ
GROWS FROM
קבץ
q-b-ts
To gather, collect, or bring together.
“gathered” in this verse is hiqqāvēṣ. The root describes drawing people into one group. Elsewhere it also describes gathering people who have been scattered across distant places, giving this court gathering a wider scriptural echo.
ALSO GROWS
qibbēṣ: Gathered or collected; an active form of the root.
קִבֵּץ
It makes the act of drawing people together visible in the same root family.
qibbuts: A gathering or collection.
קִבּוּץ
This noun preserves the root’s movement into a gathered group.
THE PATTERN
Gathering makes separate people visible together in one place.
And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.THE THREAD
And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south. The same Hebrew root קבץ (q-b-ts) describes the virgins being gathered here and people being gathered from far lands in the Psalm. Esther shows a gathering at court; the shared root also carries the wider movement of drawing the dispersed together.
