What Does Esther 3:13 Mean in the King James?
And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.

THE KEY
A decree is already violence in motion: the verse begins with a sending that releases extermination across the whole realm.
THE MEANING
You hear the decree name every Jew, from children to the old, schedule their destruction for one day, and pair their deaths with the seizure of their possessions. The verse exposes how official procedure makes mass violence portable: letters move, runners carry them, and a whole people becomes a target.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A decree is only paperwork, separate from violence. Here, its letters and runners carry an extermination order into every province.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשָּׁלְחוּ
vayishalchu
GROWS FROM
שלח
shalach
Send, send forth, release.
English makes “sent” sound like a neutral delivery step; the Hebrew verb comes from שָׁלַח (shalach, send forth or release), so the first movement is the decree released into circulation. The same root appears in שִׁלֹחַ (Shiloach, “sent,” the waters of Siloam) and שֻׁלְחָן (shulchan, “table,” provision extended): what is sent outward can carry restoration or, here, an organized death sentence.
ALSO GROWS
Shiloach: “Sent”; the name associated with the waters of Siloam.
שִׁלֹחַ
The same root of sending appears in waters associated with restored sight; here, the message sent outward carries a death order.
shulchan: Table; provision extended.
שֻׁלְחָן
The root’s sense of extending outward can carry provision, while this decree extends destruction across the provinces.
THE PATTERN
When rulers turn people into a category, a decree can make mass violence administrative, scheduled, and portable.
And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive. Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.THE THREAD
Wherein the king granted the Jews which were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, both little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey,The same sequence, destroy, slay, cause to perish, and the same language of taking spoil reappear, now directed against those who attack the Jews. The reversal preserves the decree’s machinery while changing its target, making the answer as violent as the threat.
