This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Chance chooses the date; Haman’s plan has already chosen the destruction.

A destructive intention can dress its timing in chance: the lot is cast in the first month, but the date it selects lies in the twelfth. The gap between decision and consequence is not empty; the threat is already appointed while its arrival is still delayed. The verse holds both together, a plan already active and an outcome not yet here.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A harmful plan does not become ownerless when chance chooses its timing. The lot functions within Haman’s intention; it does not replace it.

הִפִּיל

hippil

GROWS FROM

נפל

n-p-l

To fall or descend; in this causative form, to cause to fall.

The verse places ⁨פּוּר⁩ (pur, “lot,” a Persian term) beside ⁨הַגּוֹרָל⁩ (ha-goral, “the lot”), then describes the casting with ⁨הִפִּיל⁩ (hippil, “caused to fall”). English “cast” hides the fall-image: the lot’s decision appears to fall into place, while the verb still carries the act of making it fall.

ALSO GROWS

naphal: To fall, descend.

נָפַל

The same root gives the lot’s outcome the image of something falling, rather than a choice made in the abstract.

mappalah: Downfall, collapse.

מַפָּלָה

The root can also name a downfall; here the lot is cast to set the timing of a destructive plan.

A lot turns hidden uncertainty into an outcome people can see and name.

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
Jonah 1:7 · KJVThe lot converts shared uncertainty into a named person: it falls on Jonah.
The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD.
Proverbs 16:33 · KJVThe throw is visible, while the settling of its result remains with the LORD.
And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Acts 1:26 · KJVThe lot settles a vacancy into a named appointment, making an unseen selection visible.
And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
Jonah 1:7 · KJV

Esther’s ⁨הִפִּיל⁩ (hippil, “caused to fall; cast”) and Jonah’s ⁨וַיִּפֹּל⁩ (vayyippol, “and it fell”) both grow from ⁨נפל⁩ (n-p-l, “fall”); Jonah also uses ⁨הַגּוֹרָל⁩ (ha-goral, “the lot”). One passage has a lot cast before Haman to select a date, the other has a lot fall on Jonah: the shared root holds intentional casting and an outcome’s falling in the same motion.
