This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew word translated “grew” pictures breaking through a boundary: the pressure meant to contain the people becomes the setting in which they spread beyond it.

A force can press life down without owning its capacity to grow. Here, the more the pressure tightens, the farther life spreads, and that spread unsettles the force trying to contain it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the belief that being pressed down means being erased: the verse shows the pressured increasing while their oppressors are the ones grieved.

וַיִּפְרֹץ

vayifrotz

GROWS FROM

פרץ

To break through or burst out; by extension, to spread or increase.

English “grew” sounds like simple increase, but ⁨וַיִּפְרֹץ⁩ (vayifrotz, broke through) carries the image of crossing a boundary. The verse pairs multiplication with breaking out: what is pressed down spreads beyond its enclosure, and that spread grieves those applying the pressure.

ALSO GROWS

perets: A breach or break-through.

פֶּרֶץ

The same root names a breach, making the verse’s growth more than getting larger: it is life breaking past a limit.

u-faratsta: To spread or break out in every direction.

וּפָרַצְתָּ

This form appears in the promise that Abraham’s seed will spread to the west, east, north, and south, linking increase with expansion beyond boundaries.

יְעַנּוּ

ye'annu

GROWS FROM

ענה

To be brought low or humbled; in this form, to afflict or oppress.

The action translated “afflicted” carries the sense of pressing someone low. Set beside the break-out root, the verse holds two movements together: an attempt to bend life downward, and life continuing to push outward.

ALSO GROWS

ʿani: One who is brought low or afflicted.

עָנִי

The related word describes the condition of the one pressed down, bringing the action and its human cost into the same word-family.

ʿoni: Affliction or oppression.

עֳנִי

This noun names the pressure itself, while the verse’s other root shows that pressure does not determine the reach of what it bears down on.

Pressure meant to contain life does not always stop its spread; at times, what is constrained breaks beyond its boundary.

And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
Genesis 28:14 · KJVThe same ⁨פרץ⁩ (parats, break out) root describes spreading beyond every compass point.
Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
Acts 8:4 · KJVThose dispersed carry the message into new places, so scattering becomes wider spread.
The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them.
Micah 2:13 · KJV

Micah uses the same ⁨פרץ⁩ (parats, break through) root in “The breaker.” The root makes the force hidden in “grew” visible: what meets a boundary can break through it and pass beyond.
