What Does Exodus 1:19 Mean in the King James?
And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

THE KEY
The Hebrew names both the midwives and the women’s act of giving birth from ילד (yalad, to bring forth), binding the attendants to the birth already underway before they arrive.
THE MEANING
The verse places a ruler’s demand beside life already moving within women’s bodies. The midwives describe the Hebrew women as vigorous and say they give birth before the midwife reaches them. Birth unfolds on a timing the ruler does not command.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse dissolves the belief that a ruler’s command gives him control over life’s arrival.
THE ROOT
הַמְיַלְּדֹת
hamyalledot
GROWS FROM
ילד
yalad
to bear, beget, or bring forth
The same ילד (yalad, to bring forth) word-family names the midwives and the women’s act of giving birth. The language links the attendants to the birth already underway before they arrive.
ALSO GROWS
veyaladu: and they give birth
וְיָלָדוּ
This is the women’s action in the verse, from the same root as the midwives’ name.
yeled: child; boy
יֶלֶד
The child is another branch of the birth-root, the life whose arrival is at the center of the exchange.
toledot: generations; descendants
תּוֹלְדוֹת
The root carries an individual birth forward into the generations that follow.
חָיוֹת
chayot
GROWS FROM
חיה
chayah
to live; be alive
The word translated “lively” carries the Hebrew root for living. The midwives describe the women’s vigor in the language of life itself, alongside the fact that they give birth before the midwife arrives.
ALSO GROWS
chai: living; alive
חַי
This branch makes the life-language in “lively” explicit.
chayyim: life
חַיִּים
The description opens onto life as a shared root meaning, beyond speed alone.
THE PATTERN
Life forms within the body and arrives through a process already underway before others can witness it.
For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.THE THREAD
And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. The life-root חיה (chayah, live) underlies “lively” here and חַי (chai, living) in Genesis. Adam (אָדָם, adam, the ground-being, from אֲדָמָה (adamah, ground)) names Eve as Chavah (חַוָּה, ḥawwāh, the living one), tying the midwives’ description to life continuing through a mother.
