What Does Exodus 10:8 Mean in the King James?
And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go?
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Pharaoh says “Go,” but his question keeps him in control of the boundary: he still wants to decide who gets to leave.
THE MEANING
A voice can say “go” while still claiming the right to decide who qualifies. Pharaoh’s permission is conditional: the people may move, but he still tries to control the scope of their release. The verse exposes the gap between being allowed to leave and being free.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that permission to leave is the same as freedom, even while another power still decides who may go.
THE ROOT
עִבְדוּ
ʿivdu
GROWS FROM
עבד
ʿ-b-d
Work, labor, serve.
“serve” in this verse is ʿivdu. The Hebrew verb for serving the LORD belongs to the same root family as the service Egypt forces on Israel. The word leaves the question of service open: who claims the work, and who has the power to set its terms?
ALSO GROWS
avodah: Work, labor, service.
עֲבֹדָה
Exodus 1:14 uses this word for Egypt’s hard service; here Pharaoh uses the same root when he tells the people to serve the LORD.
eved: Servant, slave.
עֶבֶד
This branch names the person bound to service, bringing the question of who commands that service into Pharaoh’s question about who may go.
מֹשֶׁה
Moshe
GROWS FROM
משׁה
m-sh-h
Draw out.
The name is linked in Exodus 2:10 to being drawn out of the water. Now Moses stands before Pharaoh pressing for a people’s departure; the name’s movement from being drawn out to leading others outward echoes the release Pharaoh tries to restrict.
ALSO GROWS
məšîtihû: I drew him out.
מְשִׁיתִהוּ
In Exodus 2:10, this form explains the name Moses: Pharaoh’s daughter says she drew him out of the water.
Moshe: Moses, whose name is linked to being drawn out of water.
מֹשֶׁה
The name carries the image of being brought out, an echo beneath this scene of a people seeking to go out.
THE PATTERN
Release is complete only when the whole life can move without the former master setting its terms.
And Moses said, We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the LORD.If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.THE THREAD
And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour. The root עבד (ʿ-b-d) appears both in Egypt’s forced service here and in Pharaoh’s command to serve the LORD. That shared root makes Pharaoh’s question carry the struggle over who commands the work and who can leave.
