This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The lamb is counted by living appetites, and when one household is too small, its nearest neighbor enters the count.

When a household cannot hold the meal by itself, the nearest dwelling enters the count. Each living person is counted according to what they eat, so provision takes shape around actual appetite and shared nearness. A small household does not lose its share; its boundary opens to include a neighbor.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that being too small to provide on your own means being left without a share.

נְפָשֹׁת

nefashot

GROWS FROM

נ־פ־שׁ

n-p-sh

The living self or person, with life and appetite held together.

The verse counts living persons, not an abstract spiritual quantity. The same root can speak of the whole person and of appetite, joining the number of souls to what each one eats.

ALSO GROWS

nephesh: Living soul; person

נֶפֶשׁ

This is the singular form behind the verse’s count of souls: each person is counted as a whole living being.

naphash: Refresh oneself; rest

נָפַשׁ

This related verb points toward restored vitality; the shared meal answers the needs of living people.

קָרֹב

qarov

GROWS FROM

ק־ר־ב

q-r-b

Approach; come near.

The neighbor is identified by nearness, and that word belongs to the same root-family as drawing near. The meal’s reach follows that closeness: another household is included because it is near.

ALSO GROWS

qarav: Approach; draw near

קָרַב

The root makes nearness an active movement toward another, fitting the neighbor’s entry into the meal.

qorban: Drawing near

קָרְבָּן

This related word for an offering carries the sense of drawing near, echoing how the lamb gathers nearby people to one table.

Provision is measured by actual need and crosses the boundary of a household that cannot meet it alone.

But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.
Deuteronomy 15:8 · KJVThe open hand supplies what the person actually needs.
And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
Acts 2:45 · KJVThe community shares its resources according to each person’s need.
But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality:
2 Corinthians 8:14 · KJVOne group’s abundance crosses over to supply another’s lack.
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · KJV

The same Hebrew word that appears here as “souls” appears in Genesis as “living soul.” That link makes this a count of whole living persons, whose eating determines the shared portion.
