What Does Exodus 13:21 Mean in the King James?
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:

THE KEY
The guiding presence changes from cloud to fire, but keeps moving ahead of you through both day and night.
THE MEANING
Guidance moves in front of you, taking a form you can recognize in the conditions you are in. In daylight, the cloud marks the way; in darkness, fire gives light enough for the journey to continue. Day and night both belong to the same ongoing leading, so darkness does not mean the way has vanished.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that when you cannot see clearly, you have been abandoned to find the way alone.
THE ROOT
הַדֶּרֶךְ
haderekh
GROWS FROM
דרך
d-r-k
To tread or step.
The Hebrew word for “way” carries the sense of ground that is trodden. Here, guidance is a walkable course: the cloud and fire make the way visible so movement can continue.
ALSO GROWS
darak: To tread or step.
דָּרַךְ
The path is tied to the act of moving across it.
midrakh: A foothold or place to tread.
מִדְרָךְ
The image makes the way something the traveler can actually set a foot on.
לְהָאִיר
leha'ir
GROWS FROM
אור
ʾ-w-r
Light; to shine or illuminate.
“give them light” in this verse is leha'ir. The same root names light itself and the act of bringing light. The fire illuminates the way at night so the journey can keep going.
ALSO GROWS
or: Light.
אוֹר
This is the light the nighttime pillar makes available.
ma'or: A luminary or light-bearer.
מָאוֹר
The root also names a source that gives light, like the fire described here.
עַמּוּד
amud
GROWS FROM
עמד
ʿ-m-d
To stand or remain.
The pillar’s name grows from standing. Its steady presence goes ahead of the travelers, making stability something that accompanies movement.
ALSO GROWS
amad: To stand or remain.
עָמַד
This is the action held within the word for pillar.
ma'amad: A standing place or position.
מַעֲמָד
It extends the root’s image of a stable place to stand.
THE PATTERN
Guidance stays ahead of the traveler and keeps the way traversable through changing conditions.
The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.THE THREAD
And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.Isaiah uses the same Hebrew root אור (or, light) as Exodus’s לְהָאִיר (leha’ir, to illuminate). In both verses, light is placed before the traveler and opens a way through what could not be seen.
