What Does Exodus 13:9 Mean in the King James?
And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD’s law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt.

THE KEY
The way out of constriction becomes embodied: the hand bears its sign, the eyes its memory, and the mouth its instruction.
THE MEANING
Your going-out from constriction remains present in your body: the hand bears its mark, the eyes hold its remembrance, and the mouth carries the LORD’s instruction. The strong hand that brings you out gives shape to what you do, see, and speak now.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that deliverance is complete when the narrow place is behind you; here, being brought out remains inscribed in action, attention, and speech.
THE ROOT
הוֹצִיאֲךָ
hotzi'akha
GROWS FROM
יצא
y-ts-ʾ
To go out or emerge; in the causative form, to bring someone out.
“brought thee out” in this verse is hotzi'akha. In הוֹצִיאֲךָ, the root יצא (“go out”) appears in a causative form: the LORD causes the going-out. The person’s emergence and the act of being brought out remain one movement within the same word-family.
ALSO GROWS
yatsa: To go out, come forth.
יָצָא
This is the movement from the person’s side of the same root: the brought-out one goes forth.
yetzi'ah: Going out, departure.
יְצִיאָה
The root names departure as a movement with a direction: out from the place that confines.
motsa: Exit, outlet, point of departure.
מוֹצָא
This branch gives a name to the opening through which the going-out becomes possible.
מִצְרַיִם
Mitzrayim
GROWS FROM
צרר
ts-r-r
To bind, press in, or constrict; צַר (tsar) means narrow or tight.
“Egypt” in this verse is Mitzrayim. Mitzrayim carries the echo of צַר (“narrow”) and the dual ending -ayim: the two narrows. Beside “brought out,” the name makes the verse’s movement legible as an exit from constriction.
ALSO GROWS
tsar: Narrow, tight; constricted.
צַר
This sound-shape names the narrowing associated with Mitzrayim.
metzar: A narrow place, strait, or distress.
מֵצַר
This branch gives constriction a spatial form, which the verse’s “brought out” moves beyond.
tsarar: To bind, tie up, or press in.
צָרַר
This branch shows constriction as a binding condition as well as a narrow place.
תּוֹרַת
torat
GROWS FROM
ירה
y-r-h
To point, direct, or teach; Torah is instruction.
The word translated “law” belongs to a family of pointing, directing, and teaching. With the LORD’s instruction in the mouth, the remembered way out speaks as guidance in the present.
ALSO GROWS
yarah: To point, direct, or teach.
יָרָה
The root carries instruction as a direction made clear.
moreh: Teacher; one who directs or instructs.
מוֹרֶה
This branch connects teaching with the act of showing a direction.
torah: Instruction, teaching, direction.
תּוֹרָה
This is the word-family’s instruction, placed here in the mouth.
THE PATTERN
Deliverance becomes embodied remembrance that keeps instruction present.
And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:THE THREAD
And it came to pass the selfsame day, that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies. Both verses use הוֹצִיא (hotsi, “bring out”), a causative form of יצא (yatsa, “go out”). The same movement that brings the people out is carried forward here as a mark on hand, sight, and speech.
