THE KEY
The Egyptians are made resolute for the pursuit that becomes the place where the LORD’s weight falls on Pharaoh.
THE MEANING
The verse confronts the reader with a hard claim: God makes Egypt’s resolve firm, and Pharaoh’s whole war machine becomes the place where the LORD’s weight is displayed. That strengthened pursuit leads the army toward the sea and the destruction the next verse makes plain. The violence remains in view: God is named as the agent of the hardening, and Pharaoh’s host bears the outcome.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that growing more forceful or determined proves a power is secure; Pharaoh’s resolve is strengthened as his army moves toward defeat.
THE ROOT
מְחַזֵּק
məḥazzēq
GROWS FROM
חזק
ḥ-z-q
Be strong, grow firm, strengthen, or prevail.
Beneath “harden” is the language of strengthening and making firm: the Egyptians’ resolve is made firm to follow. The root also carries the sense of holding fast, so force and persistence gather in the same word.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāzāq: Strong, firm.
חָזָק
The adjective shows the quality the verb brings about: resolve made firm.
maḥăzîq: One who holds fast or strengthens.
מַחֲזִיק
This branch links the hardened heart with continued pursuit: the resolve holds its course.
וְאִכָּבְדָה
weʾikkāḇədāh
GROWS FROM
כבד
k-b-d
Be heavy or weighty; make weighty, honor.
The word rendered “honour” grows from the same root as weight. Hebrew gathers honor and weight under one seed: the LORD’s weight is made manifest over Pharaoh and his entire war machine.
ALSO GROWS
kāvēd: Heavy, weighty.
כָּבֵד
The concrete sense of weight remains inside the phrase about honor being gained over Pharaoh.
kāvōd: Weight, honor, glory.
כָּבוֹד
This noun lets the reader hear honor as weight made visible.
מִצְרַיִם
Miṣrayim
GROWS FROM
צרר
ṣ-r-r
Bind, press, constrain; צַר names what is narrow or constricted.
“Egyptians” in this verse is Miṣrayim. Mitzrayim carries the sound of tzar, narrowness, with the twofold form of the name. Here the constricting force is also the pursuing force: the army bears down on the people even as it comes under the LORD’s weight.
ALSO GROWS
ṣar: Narrow, tight; a constrictor or adversary.
צַר
This branch gives the name its image of pressure and narrowing.
mēṣar: A narrow place, strait, or distress.
מֵצַר
It echoes the constriction surrounding the pursuit in this verse.
THE PATTERN
Human resistance remains within God’s reach and can become the place where God’s power is made known.
And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.THE THREAD
And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so.Exodus 14:4 pairs the same roots: חזק (ḥ-z-q), to strengthen or make firm, and כבד (k-b-d), weight and honor. Verse 17 echoes that pairing as the Egyptians follow, joining hardened resolve to the LORD’s weight upon Pharaoh.
