This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The earth does not merely hide the pursuers: it swallows them with the same Hebrew root Isaiah later uses for death itself being swallowed.

You encounter protection here in a terrifyingly final form: the LORD’s hand extends, and the earth swallows the pursuers. The ground itself becomes an active participant, taking danger beyond human control. The verse holds the cost of that protection in view: the pursuers are not merely turned aside but consumed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse dissolves the assumption that deliverance leaves the threat untouched: here, the force pursuing the vulnerable is itself swallowed.

תִּבְלָעֵמוֹ

tivlaʿemo

GROWS FROM

בלע

Swallow, engulf, consume.

The Hebrew root connects engulfment with destruction: what is swallowed disappears inside the swallowing force. Isaiah 25:8 uses this same root for death itself being swallowed, so this image carries a reversal, the devouring power can itself be devoured.

ALSO GROWS

livloʿa: To swallow.

לִבְלֹעַ

Here the earth is the subject, so the ground becomes an engulfing agent rather than passive scenery.

billaʿ: Swallowed up, consumed.

בִּלַּע

Isaiah 25:8 uses this form for death being swallowed, revealing that the consuming force can itself become what is consumed.

נָטִיתָ

natita

GROWS FROM

נטה

Stretch, extend, incline.

“stretchedst out” in this verse is natita. The verb for stretching out can also describe inclining or pitching a tent. The hand’s extension is an action that reaches into the scene and changes its direction.

ALSO GROWS

natah: Stretch or extend.

נָטָה

This is the sense in the verse: the hand reaches outward as the earth swallows the pursuers.

natah: Incline or turn toward.

נָטָה

The same root can describe a turning, so the extended hand marks a decisive change in what is happening.

natah: Pitch or spread a tent.

נָטָה

Elsewhere the same verb describes spreading a tent; its sense of extension can also form a covering.

The ground itself can become the force that swallows a danger human strength cannot stop.

And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
Numbers 16:32 · KJVThe earth opens like a mouth and engulfs the people and everything bound to them.
The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.
Psalm 106:17 · KJVThe ground takes in those who stand against Moses, repeating the image of danger consumed by the earth.
And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
Revelation 12:16 · KJVThe earth swallows the flood threatening the woman, turning the ground into an agent of deliverance.
He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.
Isaiah 25:8 · KJV

Isaiah uses the same Hebrew root, ⁨בלע⁩ (balaʿ, swallow), for death itself being swallowed. Here the earth swallows the pursuers; Isaiah turns the image toward death, making the consuming power itself the thing consumed.
