And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The commander bears the name יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Yehoshua, “YHWH delivers”) before the battle begins.
THE MEANING
When conflict presses in, this verse shows distinct roles within one struggle: Joshua leads the fighters, while Moses stands on the hill with God’s rod. Joshua’s name carries “YHWH delivers,” naming deliverance within the scene before the fight begins. Direct action and the rod of God are held together without becoming the same task.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a struggle is carried only by the people visibly fighting: the verse gives the field and the hill to different people within the same encounter.
THE ROOT
יְהוֹשֻׁעַ
Yehoshua
GROWS FROM
ישע
y-sh-ʿ
Deliver, rescue, bring into safety; in the name, YHWH delivers.
“Joshua” in this verse is Yehoshua. Yehoshua’s name joins YHWH to the root ישע (yasha, deliver). English hides that the one sent into the fight carries deliverance in his name, while Moses takes the rod of God to the hill.
ALSO GROWS
yasha: To deliver or rescue.
יָשַׁע
This verb is the action inside Yehoshua’s name: deliverance is something done, not merely a state.
yeshuah: Deliverance or rescue.
יְשׁוּעָה
This noun names the outcome carried by the same root, echoing the meaning embedded in Joshua’s name.
מַטֵּה
matteh
GROWS FROM
נטה
n-t-h
Stretch out, extend, incline.
The word מַטֵּה (matteh, rod or staff) also means “tribe.” The rod of God therefore carries a quiet resonance with the people gathered for the struggle, while its root evokes something stretched or extended in the hand.
ALSO GROWS
natah: To stretch out, extend, or incline.
נָטָה
This verb gives the staff an image of extension: something held out or stretched forth.
matteh: Rod or staff; also tribe.
מַטֵּה
The same word can name Moses’ staff and a tribe, holding an instrument and a people within one word.
THE PATTERN
A shared struggle is carried through distinct contributions working together.
So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.THE THREAD
Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. The Hebrew root ישע (yasha, deliver) is embedded in Yehoshua’s name and appears in the verb translated “saveth” here. Exodus names the fighter with that root; the psalm names the LORD as the one who delivers.
