What Does Exodus 19:18 Mean in the King James?
And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

THE KEY
The LORD’s presence moves down into the mountain, and smoke, fire, and trembling make that nearness physically visible.
THE MEANING
Here, the LORD’s descent is not a distant idea: fire and smoke fill the mountain, and the ground trembles under the encounter. The verse presents divine presence as something the created world registers in its body.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The presence of the LORD is only an inward idea, separate from the material world; here, the mountain itself smokes and trembles.
THE ROOT
יָרַד
yarad
GROWS FROM
ירד
To go down or descend.
“descended” in this verse is yarad. The action flows downward: the LORD comes down onto the mountain, and nearness arrives in the place where the people stand. The word carries movement into the world, not merely an idea of presence.
ALSO GROWS
yored: A person or thing going down.
יוֹרֵד
The same root makes descent an active movement into a place, as it is here.
Yarden: The descending river; the name is associated with the root for descending.
יַרְדֵּן
The name echoes the downward movement in this verse: the LORD descends onto the mountain.
וַיֶּחֱרַד
vayeḥerad
GROWS FROM
חרד
To tremble, quake, or be in dread.
“quaked” in this verse is vayeḥerad. The Hebrew verb gives the mountain the vocabulary of trembling, a response also used of a person who trembles at the LORD’s word. The root holds bodily shaking and human trembling in one word-family.
ALSO GROWS
charadah: Trembling or terror.
חֲרָדָה
This noun shows that the root can name the state of trembling as well as the act of shaking.
ḥared: Trembling; one who trembles.
חָרֵד
Isaiah uses this form for the person who trembles at the LORD’s word, linking the mountain’s quake with a human response.
THE PATTERN
When divine presence arrives, the created world registers it physically.
The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.THE THREAD
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. The Hebrew word translated “trembleth” comes from the same root, חרד, as “quaked” in Exodus. The mountain’s physical trembling and a person’s trembling at the LORD’s word share one root.
