What Does Exodus 24:15 Mean in the King James?
And Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount.

THE KEY
The ascent brings Moses to a place where presence is marked by concealment, not visibility.
THE MEANING
Your ascent can bring you to a real threshold without making what is there visible. The cloud covers the mountain, so nearness and concealment stand together: what is present is not necessarily exposed to sight.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the assumption that nearness always brings clarity: the mountain is reached, yet the cloud covers it.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעַל
vayyaʿal
GROWS FROM
עלה
to go up, ascend, rise
“went up” in this verse is vayyaʿal. The root עלה (ʿalah, “go up”) also appears in מַעֲלָה, an ascent or step, and עֹלָה, a burnt offering whose name carries the sense of something going up. Here the ascent brings Moses to a boundary of encounter: the summit is covered rather than opened to view.
ALSO GROWS
maʿălāh: An ascent or step
מַעֲלָה
It shares the root consonants ע־ל־ה and makes the upward movement in Moses’ journey part of a wider image of ascent.
ʿōlāh: A burnt offering; an offering that goes up
עֹלָה
It shares the root consonants ע־ל־ה, connecting Moses’ going up with something else that rises.
THE PATTERN
A cloud marks divine presence by covering or filling the place of encounter.
Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD,While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.THE THREAD
And when the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, then after that the children of Israel journeyed: and in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Israel pitched their tents.“Taken up” here comes from עלה (ʿalah, “go up, rise”), the same root as Moses’ ascent in Exodus 24:15. The cloud that covers the mountain later rises from the tabernacle, and its movement marks when the people move.
