The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it.

THE KEY
The ark’s means of movement are part of its design: its poles stay attached to it.
THE MEANING
What carries the sacred is kept joined to it, ready for movement. The means of carrying do not have to be found or fitted again when the ark travels.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the assumption that movement requires disassembly: the poles remain with the ark as it is carried.
THE ROOT
יָסֻרוּ
yasuru
GROWS FROM
סור
To turn aside or depart; here, to be removed.
The Hebrew verb carries the sense of turning aside or departing, so “taken from it” also pictures the poles as not departing from the ark. The same root appears in the command “turn not from it” in Joshua 1:7, giving the verse a deeper image of remaining joined.
ALSO GROWS
lasur: To turn aside or depart.
לָסוּר
This infinitive form makes the root’s basic sense clear: the poles are not to depart from the ark.
tasur: You turn aside or depart.
תָּסוּר
Joshua 1:7 uses this form for turning away from the instruction, echoing the ark’s poles not departing from it.
THE PATTERN
What carries the sacred is equipped to bear it as part of its design.
And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them. And they drew out the staves, that the ends of the staves were seen out in the holy place before the oracle, and they were not seen without: and there they are unto this day.But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.THE THREAD
Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.“Turn not from it” uses the same root סור as “shall not be taken from it” here: to turn aside or depart. In Exodus the poles remain with the ark; in Joshua, the instruction remains the path’s reference point.
