What Does Exodus 31:12 Mean in the King James?
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The KJV makes “spake” and “saying” sound like two different acts, while Hebrew repeats one speech root, making this verse a single utterance opening toward its content.
THE MEANING
You stand at the threshold of an instruction not yet disclosed: the LORD speaks to Moses, and the saying is about to unfold. Moses’ name recalls being drawn out of water, so the one addressed carries emergence within his name.
THE ROOT
וַיֹּאמֶר
wayyomer
GROWS FROM
אמר
to say, speak, utter
“spake / saying” in this verse is wayyomer. The Hebrew forms in this line share אָמַר (ʾāmar, to say): the opening verb and the closing “saying” belong to one speech-root. English gives them different words, but the line presents one utterance opening into its own unfolding.
ALSO GROWS
lemor: saying; to say
לֵאמֹר
This form appears in the verse itself, repeating the same root after the opening verb.
ʾimrāh: utterance, saying
אִמְרָה
This noun branch makes the spoken word itself visible inside the root of “spake” and “saying.”
מֹשֶׁה
Mosheh
GROWS FROM
משה
draw out, pull from water
Exodus 2:10 ties the name to being drawn out of water, so Moses’ name carries emergence within it. Here the one named through that emergence is met by a voice.
ALSO GROWS
māšāh: to draw out
מָשָׁה
This is the root linked to Moses’ name and the act of drawing him from the water.
meshitihu: I drew him out
מְשִׁיתִהוּ
In Exodus 2:10, this form makes the name’s connection to being drawn out explicit.
THE PATTERN
The divine voice begins an encounter by addressing someone directly, before the response and instruction emerge.
And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?THE THREAD
For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.Psalm 33:9 uses אָמַר (ʾāmar, to say) for “spake,” then places the result beside it: “it was done.” The same root that opens Exodus 31:12 is shown reaching its effect here.
