What Does Exodus 32:27 Mean in the King James?
And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

THE KEY
The command carries violence through the nearest bonds inside the camp, naming kin and companion as targets.
THE MEANING
The verse places the LORD’s authority beside an order for each man to kill those closest to him: brother, companion, and near relation. The violence moves through the camp’s own bonds; it is not aimed at an outside enemy. The words hold sacred command and the killing of one’s own together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that violence belongs only to conflict with outsiders: the command turns toward brother, companion, and the person nearest to each man.
THE ROOT
קְרֹבוֹ
qerovo
GROWS FROM
קרב
qarab
To approach, draw near, or come close.
The Hebrew word rendered “neighbour” means his near one or relative. With brother and companion already named, this word presses the command into the closest circle of belonging.
ALSO GROWS
qarov: Near, close
קָרוֹב
This branch makes the relational nearness in “his neighbour” explicit: the target is someone close to him.
qorban: Offering; something brought near
קָרְבָּן
The same root’s movement toward nearness appears in a word for an offering, revealing the broader idea of approach carried by this root.
THE PATTERN
When loyalty is cast as divine, scripture locates conflict inside the household and among the nearest bonds.
But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.THE THREAD
But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. The verb behind “slay” here and “kill” there is the same Hebrew root, הָרַג (harag, to kill). Deuteronomy 13:6 names a brother, child, wife, or intimate friend as the person who may be killed, so the same lethal command reaches into kinship.
