What Does Exodus 33:5 Mean in the King James?

For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The LORD’s nearness is not automatically comfort here: the same arrival that enters their midst could consume them.

A hardened posture makes the LORD’s nearness dangerous: he says appearing among you could consume you. The ornaments come off while his response remains undetermined, so the threat and the possibility of another action remain present.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the assumption that divine nearness is automatically safe regardless of the posture a person brings to it.

קְשֵׁה־עֹרֶף

qesheh-ʿoref

GROWS FROM

קשה

q-sh-h

To be hard, severe, or difficult.

“stiffnecked” in this verse is qesheh-ʿoref. The phrase joins “hard” to “neck,” the part that turns; resistance is pictured as an unyielding direction. The warning follows that named hardness: sudden nearness becomes perilous.

ALSO GROWS

qāšeh: Hard, severe, difficult.

קָשֶׁה

The same word-family makes the people’s resistance a condition of hardness, not simply a fixed posture.

hiqšāh: To make hard or harden.

הִקְשָׁה

This form shows hardness as something that can be intensified, sharpening the image of resistance that will not yield.

וְכִלִּיתִיךָ

wĕkallîtîkā

GROWS FROM

כָּלָה

k-l-h

To be complete or finished; to bring something to an end, and in this form, consume.

The verb carries the force of bringing the people to an end. “Consume” here names a real destruction, not a vague expression of displeasure.

ALSO GROWS

kālāh: To be complete, come to an end.

כָּלָה

The branch makes the ending inside “consume” audible.

killāyôn: Destruction, complete ending.

כִּלָּיוֹן

This noun carries the same root toward the full destruction threatened in the verse.

וְאֵדְעָה

wĕʾēdʿāh

GROWS FROM

יָדַע

y-d-ʿ

To know, recognize, or perceive.

The LORD’s “know” belongs to a word-family for knowing and acquaintance, not only collecting facts. The ornaments are to come off before the decision, presenting what follows as a response to the people now exposed before him.

ALSO GROWS

daʿat: Knowledge, knowing.

דַּעַת

This noun shares the root’s sense of knowing or perceiving.

mōdaʿ: Acquaintance, kinsman.

מוֹדָע

This related word carries knowing into personal recognition and relationship.

When a person’s standing before God is at issue, outward adornment can be removed and cannot decide the encounter.

And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
Exodus 33:6 · KJVThe people enact the command by taking off their ornaments at the mountain.
In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,
Isaiah 3:18 · KJVJudgment is pictured as God removing the ornaments, showing that adornment cannot shield the people from what is coming.
Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
1 Peter 3:3 · KJVThe verse moves outward adornment out of the decisive place when describing what makes a person beautiful.
Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
Exodus 32:10 · KJV

Exodus 32:10 uses the same root, ⁨כָּלָה⁩ (kālāh, bring to an end), for “consume.” The shared word connects this verse’s threat to the earlier one and shows that the possible outcome is the people’s destruction.
