This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew verb translated “seethe” also describes grapes ripening, so a verse about the land’s first yield sets natural maturation beside cooking imposed on a young animal.

The land’s first yield is brought into the house of the LORD, and a young animal is not cooked in its mother’s milk. What is received and how it is used both have boundaries.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the belief that having something means having an unlimited claim over it: the first yield is given to the LORD, and the young animal is not cooked in the milk that nourishes it.

תְבַשֵּׁל

tevashel

GROWS FROM

בשל

To ripen or to cook, depending on context.

“seethe” in this verse is tevashel. The verb for cooking the kid shares its root with a verb for grapes coming ripe. English separates these as cooking and ripening, while Hebrew gives them a shared word-family: one names maturity arriving, the other food prepared by human action.

ALSO GROWS

bashél: Ripe; cooked

בָּשֵׁל

The same root can describe a natural state of ripeness or food that has been cooked.

bishul: Cooking, boiling

בִּשּׁוּל

This branch names the preparation the verse prohibits when it uses the mother’s milk to cook her young.

בִּכּוּרִים

bikkurim

GROWS FROM

בכר

To be first or to emerge first.

“firstfruits” in this verse is bikkurim. The word for the land’s first produce shares its root with the word for a firstborn. Both name what emerges first: the earliest yield from the ground and the first child from a mother.

ALSO GROWS

bekhor: Firstborn

בְּכוֹר

A first child and the first yield of a field share the language of first emergence.

bikkur: First ripe fruit

בִּכּוּר

This branch names the land’s earliest produce, the part brought into the LORD’s house.

What emerges first is marked as belonging to God, whether it is the land’s yield or a people brought forth by God’s word.

That thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a basket, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name there.
Deuteronomy 26:2 · KJVThe land’s first produce is carried to the place God chooses, extending the firstfruits pattern.
Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
Proverbs 3:9 · KJVThe firstfruits remain the portion named for honoring the LORD.
Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
James 1:18 · KJVThe firstfruits image reaches people brought forth through the word of truth.
And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:
Genesis 40:10 · KJV

Genesis uses the same root for grapes described as “ripe grapes.” Here it names cooking a kid; the shared word holds natural ripening and deliberate cooking together.
