What Does Exodus 34:33 Mean in the King James?
And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face.

THE KEY
The veil is placed after the message is complete, so covering the radiance does not erase it.
THE MEANING
Brightness remains beneath the covering: Moses places the veil only after he finishes speaking. The verse holds visibility and concealment together, what has shone is still real when the face is covered. The next verse shows the veil lifted when Moses turns toward the LORD.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A covered face does not mean the radiance has vanished; here, the veil is placed after the speaking ends.
THE ROOT
פָּנָיו
panav
GROWS FROM
פנה
turn, face toward
The Hebrew for face belongs to the פנה family, meaning to turn or face toward: a face is the front turned toward someone. Moses’ covering changes what can be seen of his presence after he has spoken, and the next verse makes the face’s turning decisive.
ALSO GROWS
panim: face, front, presence
פָּנִים
This branch makes the face more than a surface: it is the visible front of a presence.
panah: turn, face toward
פָּנָה
The verb and the face share a root, linking what is seen to the direction in which someone turns.
וַיִּתֵּן
vayitten
GROWS FROM
נתן
give, place, set
English “put” foregrounds location; נתן also carries the sense “give” or “set.” The veil is an intentional covering placed after speech, not a change in what Moses’ face is.
ALSO GROWS
mattanah: gift
מַתָּנָה
This noun carries the root’s sense of giving, which sits beneath the English sense of placing.
netinah: giving, placement
נְתִינָה
This form keeps the root’s two shades together: something is both given and set in place.
THE PATTERN
A face can be covered after its brightness is shown, then unveiled again when it turns toward the LORD.
But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.THE THREAD
But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded. The same Hebrew noun מַסְוֶה (masveh, veil) names the covering placed after speech and removed when Moses enters to speak with the LORD. The repeated word makes the veil a temporary boundary around the face, not the disappearance of what shines.
