What Does Exodus 34:34 Mean in the King James?
But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.

THE KEY
The veil lifts for an encounter whose words do not originate in Moses: he leaves the LORD’s presence carrying what the LORD has spoken.
THE MEANING
Before the LORD, the veil comes off; the encounter is unhidden. What moves outward is not self-authored: Moses speaks what the LORD commands. The movement from presence to speech is alive now: what is received can be carried outward.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that you must produce the message yourself: Moses speaks what the LORD commands.
THE ROOT
יְצַוֵּה
yəṣawwēh
GROWS FROM
צוה
ṣ-w-h
command, charge, appoint
“commanded” in this verse is yəṣawwēh. The Hebrew form means “he commands,” with the LORD as the source of the words Moses speaks. The verse links speech to a received charge, rather than to Moses’ own invention.
ALSO GROWS
ṣav: command, charge
צַו
This compact form keeps the sense of an issued charge close to the command Moses carries.
miṣwāh: command, instruction
מִצְוָה
The same root names instruction; Moses’ speech gives voice to what he receives.
לִפְנֵי
lifnei
GROWS FROM
פנה
p-n-h
turn toward, face
“Before the LORD” uses language connected to face and presence. The veil comes off in an encounter oriented toward the LORD’s face, not merely at a location.
ALSO GROWS
pānāh: turn toward, face
פָּנָה
The root’s movement toward a face gives “before” the sense of direct presence.
pānîm: face; presence
פָּנִים
This face word underlies the language of being before someone and illuminates the unveiled encounter.
מֹשֶׁה
Mōsheh
GROWS FROM
משה
m-sh-h
draw out, pull from water
Moses’ name carries the image of being drawn out of water. Here the one drawn out comes out from the LORD’s presence carrying words to the people.
ALSO GROWS
māshāh: draw out
מָשָׁה
Exodus 2:10 uses this verb to explain the name Moses through being drawn from the water.
meshîtihu: I drew him out
מְשִׁיתִהוּ
This form appears in the name’s biblical explanation and gives Moses’ name its drawn-out nature.
THE PATTERN
Speech that reaches others begins in what is first received in God’s presence.
And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.THE THREAD
And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.The same Hebrew noun מַסְוֶה (masveh, “veil”) appears again, and this verse shows Moses putting it back on after he comes out. The face language also echoes “before the LORD,” making the rhythm visible: uncovered in the encounter, covered as he returns to the people.
