What Does Exodus 34:35 Mean in the King James?
And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
A veil can conceal a radiance the face has already made visible.
THE MEANING
The face bears a visible trace of encounter with God: even the skin shines, and the people see it. The veil changes what is visible; it does not make the radiance unreal.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that what is covered must be absent: the verse places the veil over a face whose radiance has been seen.
THE ROOT
קָרַן
qaran
GROWS FROM
קרן
qaran
Horn; something projecting outward, and by extension a ray.
“shone” in this verse is qaran. Qaran shares its three consonants with qeren, a horn and, by extension, a ray. The face’s shining carries the image of something radiating outward, so the veil covers what the verse presents as visible light.
ALSO GROWS
qeren: Horn; also a ray or beam.
קֶרֶן
This branch reveals the projecting image inside the word for shining.
qaran: To emit rays; to shine.
קָרַן
This is the verb used for Moses’ face, joining the visible radiance to the same root as the horn or ray.
פָּנִים
panim
GROWS FROM
פנה
panah
Turn toward; face.
Panim names the face, the part turned toward another and through which a person is met. The repeated face in this verse gives the radiance an embodied, visible place: what is encountered in speaking with God appears on the face.
ALSO GROWS
panim: Face; presence.
פָּנִים
The face is where the shining becomes visible to others.
panah: To turn; to face toward.
פָּנָה
This branch opens the face as the place turned toward another, linking visibility with encounter.
מֹשֶׁה
Moshe
GROWS FROM
משה
mashah
Draw out.
“Moses” in this verse is Moshe. The name Moshe is linked in Exodus 2:10 to mashah, to draw out, and carries the sense of drawn out. Here that name stands beside a face whose radiance comes into view, placing the nature of the person and the visible image in the same movement from hiddenness to appearance.
ALSO GROWS
mashah: To draw out.
מָשָׁה
This is the verb linked to Moshe’s name and gives the name its nature.
Moshe: Moses; the one drawn out.
מֹשֶׁה
The name meaning drawn out belongs to the person whose face’s radiance is drawn into view.
THE PATTERN
Encounter with God makes the face a visible witness, whether it shines directly or reflects what it beholds.
And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.THE THREAD
And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.The same Hebrew verb, qaran, describes Moses’ shining face in both verses, carrying the image of radiance projecting outward. Verse 29 shows the face shining as Moses speaks with God; this verse shows the veil shaping what others see.
