What Does Exodus 37:2 Mean in the King James?
And he overlaid it with pure gold within and without, and made a crown of gold to it round about.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The covering reaches the hidden face as fully as the visible one, and a gold rim circles the whole boundary.
THE MEANING
What is hidden within and what is shown outside receive the same covering; the boundary is crowned all around. Wholeness leaves no inward side untreated and no edge unfinished.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that a beautiful exterior is enough: the inside receives the same covering as the outside.
THE ROOT
וַיְצַפֵּהוּ
vayetsappehu
GROWS FROM
צפה
To overlay or plate with a covering.
“overlaid” in this verse is vayetsappehu. This is a layer laid over the wooden core, and the verse carries it from the inside to the outside. The same root describes plating the inner sanctuary, linking the ark’s covering to a larger sacred space.
ALSO GROWS
ve-tsippita: You shall overlay
וְצִפִּיתָ
Exodus 25:11 uses the same root for the ark’s gold covering, specifying both inside and outside.
vayetsappehu: He overlaid it
וַיְצַפֵּהוּ
1 Kings 6:20 uses the same root for plating the inner sanctuary.
סָבִיב
saviv
GROWS FROM
סבב
To go around or surround.
“round about” in this verse is saviv. The phrase places the gold crown in a complete circuit around the vessel. Its boundary is not finished at one point; the encircling edge receives the same gold finish.
ALSO GROWS
savav: To go around, surround
סָבַב
This verb makes the circle in the crown’s placement explicit.
misaviv: All around, on every side
מִסָּבִיב
This form expresses the full perimeter that the verse gives to the gold crown.
THE PATTERN
A vessel’s wholeness concerns its hidden interior as well as its visible exterior.
Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about.THE THREAD
And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the altar which was of cedar. The Hebrew root צפה (tsaphah, to overlay or plate) appears here again for the gold covering of the inner sanctuary. The ark’s inside-and-outside covering belongs to a wider pattern in which even the hidden chamber receives the gold layer.
