What Does Exodus 37:5 Mean in the King James?
And he put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, to bear the ark.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The ark’s holiness does not make it immovable: its weight is built to travel through supports fitted to it.
THE MEANING
The rings receive the poles, and the poles receive the ark’s weight: the means of carrying are built into what is carried. The ark remains weighty, yet it can move through a form made for bearing it. The verse holds sacredness and movement together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that what is sacred must either remain still or be carried by sheer strength.
THE ROOT
לָשֵׂאת
laset
GROWS FROM
נָשָׂא
nasa
To lift, carry, bear, or take up.
“bear” in this verse is laset. The verb for bearing the ark belongs to a root that also names what is borne: the load itself. The poles make that connection visible, the ark’s weight is not erased, but given a way to travel.
ALSO GROWS
massa: A burden or load.
מַשָּׂא
The load is the thing lifted and borne; here, the poles give the ark’s weight a means of movement.
nasi: A prince or leader, one elevated to a position of standing.
נָשִׂיא
The same root can describe elevation as well as carrying, linking what is lifted with what is borne.
THE PATTERN
A burden becomes bearable through a form of carrying that preserves its weight while giving it support.
And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.THE THREAD
And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.“I will bear” translates the same Hebrew root, נשׂא (nasa), as “to bear” in this verse. The ark is carried by supports fitted to it; Isaiah uses the same root for a life held and carried through every age.
