What Does Exodus 4:8 Mean in the King James?
And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The sign has a voice, and the Hebrew for “believe” is trust taking hold of what proves firm.
THE MEANING
A first sign does not exhaust what can be recognized now: what remains unheard through one sign may become clear through another. The verse gives the sign a voice, making recognition more than a reaction to words alone.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that one missed or unconvincing sign proves the message cannot be received; another form of evidence can still be heard.
THE ROOT
יַאֲמִינוּ
ya’aminu
GROWS FROM
אמן
ʾ-m-n
To be firm or reliable; hence, to trust as firm.
English “believe” can sound like inward assent, while אמן carries firmness and trust. Here, the latter sign’s voice gives trust a ground on which to become steady.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāmēn: Amen; firm, truly.
אָמֵן
The same root marks a spoken word as dependable, echoing the trust the latter sign evokes.
ʾĕmûnāh: Trust, steadfastness.
אֱמוּנָה
Trust is carried as steadiness, not just agreement with a claim.
neʾĕmān: Reliable, trustworthy.
נֶאֱמָן
The root describes the quality that allows trust to rest on someone or something.
THE PATTERN
A sign can give a message a voice when words alone have not yet made it heard.
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.THE THREAD
And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.Genesis uses the same Hebrew root, אָמַן (ʾaman, to trust as firm), for Abraham’s trust in the LORD. That shared root opens Exodus’s “believe” as trust taking hold, here through the voice of a sign.
