What Does Exodus 5:23 Mean in the King James?
For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

THE KEY
Speaking in God’s name means invoking God’s nature, yet the verse holds the reader inside the contradiction: harm is increasing while deliverance has not come.
THE MEANING
The verse gives words to the moment when God’s name is invoked but the people are still being harmed. It does not hide the gap between the nature that name carries and what the reader sees: Pharaoh’s harm deepens while deliverance remains absent. The doubled Hebrew verb makes that absence emphatic: the people have not been delivered at all.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that speaking in God’s name guarantees that pressure will immediately lift. The verse lets the harm remain visible while the cry for deliverance is still unanswered.
THE ROOT
הִצַּלְתָּ
hiṣṣaltā
GROWS FROM
נצל
To snatch away, rescue, or deliver.
“delivered” in this verse is hiṣṣaltā. The verse doubles the rescue root in הַצֵּל לֹא־הִצַּלְתָּ: an infinitive absolute followed by its finite verb, sharpening the denial to “you have not rescued at all.” The root’s force includes snatching someone away, so what is missing here is the people’s actual extraction from Pharaoh’s grip.
ALSO GROWS
haṣṣēl: The emphatic infinitive form of the same verb in this verse.
הַצֵּל
It stands beside the finite verb to intensify the denial: no rescuing has happened.
wəniṣṣaltem: To strip away or take from someone.
וְנִצַּלְתֶּם
The same root can describe stripping away what an oppressor holds, illuminating deliverance as a forceful taking-out from another’s grasp.
THE PATTERN
When suffering deepens, scripture lets the cry name God’s seeming absence and nonresponse without silencing it.
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?THE THREAD
And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.Exodus 18:8 uses the same root, נצל (nāṣal), for the LORD delivering the people. The root denied here, “not delivered”, is the same word named there as accomplished rescue, while the anguish of this complaint remains real.
