King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The frogs’ rising reaches the ruler, the people, and every servant, carrying one invasion through the entire order.
THE MEANING
Frogs rise across the whole order named here: you, your people, and every servant. The person at the center and every person beneath that authority are within the same reach.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that rank keeps danger confined to people below you. Here, the rise reaches the ruler, the people, and every servant alike.
THE ROOT
וְעָלוּ
weʿalu
GROWS FROM
עלה
Rise, ascend, move upward.
“come up” in this verse is weʿalu. The Hebrew verb depicts an upward movement, and its branches include both a rising offering and ascent or steps. Here, that movement becomes an invasion spreading across every named rank.
ALSO GROWS
ʿolah: Ascending offering; that which goes up.
עֹלָה
This branch preserves the root’s upward movement; here, the rising is frogs advancing over a whole population.
maʿalah: Ascent, step.
מַעֲלָה
The same root can name a route or step upward; here the ascent spreads through a population rather than describing one person’s climb.
עֲבָדֶיךָ
ʿavādeykha
GROWS FROM
עבד
Work, serve.
The root keeps the servants tied to service and labor. “All” brings the entire subordinate workforce into the same reach as the ruler and the people.
ALSO GROWS
ʿeved: Servant, worker, bondservant.
עֶבֶד
This noun from the root names those in service; the verse explicitly includes all of them in the frogs’ reach.
ʿavodah: Work, labor, service.
עֲבֹדָה
This branch shows the work and service held within the same word-family as “servants,” extending the verse’s reach through the whole household order.
THE PATTERN
A judgment can overrun every boundary, from household spaces to whole landscapes.
And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneadingtroughs:And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.THE THREAD
Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? The same root, עלה (ʿalah, rise or ascend), names both movements. Here the ascent carries frogs across every rank; in Psalm 24 it is a human ascent toward the LORD’s hill, showing how the same rising word can open very different scenes.
