This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The root of “came up” names ascent itself, and here that ascent becomes a covering over the whole land.

The reader sees a force that does not stay where it begins: Aaron stretches his hand above the waters, frogs rise, and the land is covered. Mitzrayim (⁨מִצְרַיִם⁩, “the two narrows”) becomes the scene of movement from a confined source toward a land-wide covering.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that what begins at the water’s edge stays contained there: the rising spreads across the land.

וַתַּעַל

vatta'al

GROWS FROM

עלה

to rise, go up, ascend

The English phrase “came up” can sound like a mere change of place, but ⁨עלה⁩ (ʿalah, “to rise”) holds the upward movement itself, also naming an ascent and what rises. Here that movement swells from the waterline into a covering over the land.

ALSO GROWS

ʿolah: burnt offering; that which rises

עֹלָה

Its name is tied to ascending, making the root’s upward movement explicit beyond the frogs’ rising.

ma'alah: ascent, step, or degree

מַעֲלָה

The same root can name a level of ascent; here the rise crosses from water to land.

וַתְּכַס

vatekhas

GROWS FROM

כסה

to cover over, conceal, spread across

“Covered” describes more than frogs being present: the land’s exposed surface disappears beneath what spreads over it. This root also forms words for a covering, tying the action to the thing that hides what lies beneath.

ALSO GROWS

mikhseh: covering, roof

מִכְסֶה

This noun names a thing that covers, giving shape to the spread that covers the land in the verse.

mekhasseh: one who covers; covering

מְכַסֶּה

This form keeps the root’s action visible: the land is covered by what moves over it.

What rises or spreads from a source can fill or cover the whole field it reaches.

And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
Genesis 7:19 · KJVThe waters rise until even the high hills across the earth are covered.
Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains.
Psalm 104:6 · KJVThe deep spreads over the earth like a garment, extending beyond the mountains.
It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
Luke 13:21 · KJVWhat is hidden in one part spreads until it reaches the whole.
And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow.
Genesis 41:2 · KJV

Genesis uses ⁨עלה⁩ (ʿalah, “to rise”) for the cows that come up from the river; Exodus uses the same root for the frogs. The shared word makes the rising from the water visible in both passages, while here what rises spreads across the land.
