This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The magicians can make the frogs rise, but their imitation cannot make the affliction recede.

A spectacle can reproduce an affliction while leaving its consequence in place. Reproducing what overwhelms a place does not release anyone from it. This distinction remains present wherever display is mistaken for deliverance.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A display that copies power must also possess the power to deliver.

וַיַּעֲלוּ

wayya'alu

GROWS FROM

עלה

Rise, go up, ascend

“brought up” in this verse is wayya'alu. The magicians make an ascent happen: the frogs rise onto the land. The same root names both an ascending offering and an ascent, but here rising multiplies the affliction rather than bringing release.

ALSO GROWS

olah: Ascending offering; burnt offering

עֹלָה

Its name carries the same upward movement, showing how one root can describe very different kinds of rising.

aliyah: Ascent; going up

עֲלִיָּה

This branch makes the verse’s direction explicit: the frogs come up onto the land.

מִצְרַיִם

Mitsrayim

GROWS FROM

צרר

Bind, press in, constrict

“Egypt” in this verse is Mitsrayim. Mitsrayim carries the image of the two narrows, linked to tzar, meaning narrow. The frogs rise across a land whose name already holds constriction, as the affliction spreads within the narrow place.

ALSO GROWS

metzar: Narrow place; distress

מֵצַר

It makes the constriction carried by the name of Egypt visible as a condition.

tsarah: Distress; trouble

צָרָה

It shows how pressing in becomes a lived affliction, like the frogs overwhelming the land.

Imitation can reproduce a sign while leaving the affliction and its release unresolved.

And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, neither did he hearken unto them; as the LORD had said.
Exodus 7:22 · KJVThe magicians repeat the sign of the waters turned to blood, but the plague remains.
And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not: so there were lice upon man, and upon beast.
Exodus 8:18 · KJVTheir imitative craft reaches a limit, while the infestation remains.
And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Revelation 13:14 · KJVMiracles can persuade through their appearance while serving deception rather than release.
And Moses said unto Pharaoh, Glory over me: when shall I intreat for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, to destroy the frogs from thee and thy houses, that they may remain in the river only?
Exodus 8:9 · KJV

The next exchange reveals the gap this verse leaves open: the magicians bring frogs up, but Pharaoh asks when they will be taken away. The passage turns from multiplying the affliction to seeking its release.
