What Does Exodus 9:4 Mean in the King James?
And the LORD shall sever between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt: and there shall nothing die of all that is the children’s of Israel.

THE KEY
The boundary is the wonder: the plague moves through Egypt, yet Israel’s cattle are marked off for life.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks of preservation with a boundary inside danger: the LORD distinguishes Israel’s cattle from Egypt’s, and none belonging to Israel dies. Egypt, מִצְרַיִם (Mitzrayim, “the two narrows”), names constriction in the larger arc, while the promise marks life as kept distinct within it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that destruction sweeps through without distinction: the verse names a boundary and says Israel’s livestock remain alive.
THE ROOT
וְהִפְלָה
wəhip̄lāh
GROWS FROM
פלא
p-l-ʾ
To be extraordinary or wondrous; in this verb form, to distinguish or set apart.
The verb for setting apart belongs to the same root family that names a wonder. English “sever” can sound like merely cutting something off, while the Hebrew brings a marked distinction into view as preservation amid the plague.
ALSO GROWS
pele: Wonder, marvel.
פֶּלֶא
This branch gives the act of distinction a note of the extraordinary: life is preserved while danger moves through the surrounding field.
nifla’ot: Wonders, extraordinary acts.
נִפְלָאוֹת
The same root names what is wondrous; here the distinction itself is the striking feature of the promise.
THE PATTERN
Preservation can appear as a distinction that remains intact while danger moves through the surrounding field.
And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.THE THREAD
And I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midst of the earth.“Sever” in both verses translates a form of פלא (p-l-ʾ), the root of setting apart and wonder. The earlier verse marks off Goshen; here the same distinction reaches the livestock, moving from protected ground to preserved life.
