What Does Ezekiel 1:27 Mean in the King James?
And I saw as the colour of amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward, and from the appearance of his loins even downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and it had brightness round about.

THE KEY
The Hebrew root for “I saw” also gives the word for “appearance,” binding the act of seeing to what appears.
THE MEANING
The vision places before you a form whose appearance is fire from the loins upward and downward, with brightness all around. The two halves are held within one surrounding radiance: the image is both distinctly embodied and enveloping.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It unsettles the belief that a vision of the divine is only an abstract idea: this one is described as a visible form, surrounded by fire and brightness.
THE ROOT
מַרְאֶה
mar’eh
GROWS FROM
ראה
ra’ah
To see, look, or perceive; its word family also names sight and appearance.
The clause וָאֵרֶא (va’ere, “and I saw”) shares ראה (ra’ah, “to see”) with מַרְאֶה (mar’eh, “appearance”). Hebrew holds the seeing and the visible form in one word family, so the fire is both what appears and what the seer sees.
ALSO GROWS
va’ere: The act of seeing.
וָאֵרֶא
This is Ezekiel’s own verb in the verse, sharing its root with the repeated word for appearance.
ro’eh: A person who sees or perceives.
רֹאֶה
This form names the perceiver, completing the family that links the seer, seeing, and what is seen.
THE PATTERN
Visions make the divine perceptible through visible forms marked by fire or radiance.
And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel. And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;THE THREAD
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.“Appeared” in Exodus and “appearance” in Ezekiel grow from ראה (ra’ah, “to see”). Both verses place fire within a visible encounter, joining what is seen to the act of seeing.
